Leiden is a lively city that offers a wide variety of parties and festivals. But it also has plenty to choose from in music, dance and theatre entertainment. This page gives you just a small selection of Leiden’s many cultural events.
The Leiden Schouwburg
The oldest theatre in the Netherlands, the Leiden Schouwburg has been the cultural heart of
Leiden since 1705. This beautiful building is praised by performers and visitors alike for its unique ambience, excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. An evening out at the Leiden Schouwburg is a very special experience.
The Scheltema Complex
Scheltema, located in the heart of the city, is the complex for contemporary art. In these historic premises, contemporary art disciplines are blended within a unique form of collaboration. Scheltema is an inspiring meeting place for people, culture and scholarship.
This beautiful historic monument dates from 1891 and was built in neo-Renaissance style – a style that can now be found hardly anywhere else in the Netherlands. You can enjoy a wide range of concerts here, from classical to pop. The Stadsgehoorzaal is particularly praised for its excellent acoustics, and many concerts and CD recordings are held here every year.
The LAKtheater is a modern theatre. Located between the Rapenburg and the Witte Singel, the theatre is part of the University, but all its activities are open for everyone. The programme is surprising and innovative, and includes a number of very popular youth activities. Would you like a foretaste of the programme? If so, you can join the try-out – or WarmLopen – sessions on Sunday afternoons throughout the year.
